Obituary of Emory Joseph Markovic

Emory Joseph Markovic of Mount Ephraim, New Jersey passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 5, 2023.  He was 86 years old. Emory will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved this hard working, passionate, loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend.

Emory was born in Philadelphia and was a lifelong resident of Mount Ephraim. He graduated from Audubon High School in 1954 and continued his education at Delaware Valley University where he earned his Bachelor of Science. Emory played 4 years of varsity football and baseball and 2 years of varsity basketball at Delaware Valley University and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984. Emory spent over 40 years teaching and taught 37 years as a Science Teacher for Cinnaminson High School where he was a class advisor and two-time Teacher of the Year. For over 25 years he was also the director of the biology weekend where students learned about Earth and Environmental Sciences along the Appalachian Trail. Emory started the baseball program at Cinnaminson High School and served as the Varsity Baseball Coach and Varsity Softball Coach with over 300 wins and 20 State tournaments combined. Emory was inducted into the Cinnaminson High School Hall of Fame in 2001. Emory was also a Clock Official for 49 years for the New Jersey Football Association in South Jersey and a Clock Official for girls’ basketball at Cinnaminson High School for 25 years. Throughout his teaching Career Emory's goal and focus was on constant improvement through continued learning and he attended Temple, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, California (Berkeley), and Oklahoma Universities to earn certifications that would enhance and strengthen his teaching background.  Emory served 22 years in the New Jersey National Guard/50th Armored Division and retired with a rank of Major.

Emory was a passionate man and loved giving back to his community. He served on the Mount Ephraim Board of Education for 14 years working to maintain and improve the quality of education in the district. He was passionate about all sports and was active with Mount Ephraim Little League as a coach for 9 years, Mount Ephraim Street Hockey league and Mount Ephraim Softball League for six years. Emory loved attending and cheering on his children and grandchildren at all of their sporting events. He had fond memories of spending his summers in Long Beach Island with his family and working at Farias Surf and Sport for over 25 years. He also enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Washington, Atlantic City and Clearwater Florida for Phillies Spring Training. Emory loved playing Scrabble with his wife, reading the sports page, planting his garden and trees, and doing puzzles and Sudoku. 

Emory was married to his lovely wife Joan (nee Waters) of almost 58 years on August 28. Loving father of Mark (Karen) Markovic, Celeste McCormick, and Neil (Sara) Markovic.  Devoted grandfather who treasured his grandchildren; Kyle Markovic, Allison McCormick, Dylan Markovic, Ryan McCormick, and Logan Markovic.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Emory's viewing on Saturday, August 12 from 10 AM - 12 noon in the McGUINNESS FUNERAL HOME, 34 Hunter Street, Woodbury where his Funeral Ceremony will follow at 12 Noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Emory's memory may be made to the Mount Ephraim Youth Athletic Association, P. O. Box 24, Mount Ephraim, NJ 08059.
