Obituary of Joseph Melvin

Joseph Melvin, of Oak Valley, New Jersey, passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2021. He was 95.    

Legacy

He was born and raised in Pittston, PA, where he met and married the love of his life, Flora., in 1949. They left Pittston and moved to Washington D.C., where Joe worked for the Smithsonian.  He had the honor of guarding the Declaration of Independence before it was encased in helium.  He later moved with his family to Oak Valley, NJ and worked at the Veteran's Hospital in Philadelphia.  Joseph proudly served our country in the US Marine Corps and served during WWII where he fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima and received a Purple Heart.   He will be remembered for being a huge Notre Dame football fan and also liked the Phillies and hunting with friends.  He liked to putz around in the garden and being outdoors.

He is the beloved husband of  the late Flora (Cicala) Melvin; loving father of Anne Bush (Philip), Mary Shute (Thomas) and the late Joseph Melvin Jr.; dear brother Marie Lucille Melvin and the late Fred, Martin & Eugene Melvin; cherished grandfather of Amanda, Lauren, Douglas, Donald, Gina & Melinda and great grandfather of seven. 


Farewell Tribute



Relatives and friends are invited to the McGuinness Funeral Home 34 Hunter Street, Woodbury, NJ 08096 for a visitation on Wednesday May 5, 2021 from 6-8 PM.  Family & friends will meet at Infant of Jesus Parish at St. Margaret's Church (3rd & Beech St., Woodbury) on Thursday May 6, 2021 for a 10 AM Funeral Mass.  Interment will follow at Eglington Cemetery,  Clarksboro, NJ.
