Obituary of Father William J. Fallon

CAMDEN- December 9, 2003- The Reverend William John Fallon, former pastor at St. John's, Paulsboro, died December 6, 2003 at Virtua Hospital, Voorhees of complications following surgery. Father Fallon was 66. Fr. Fallon retired in September 2000 and had since resided at St. Mary Nursing Home and Sacred Heart Residence in Cherry Hill. "He suffered for years from diabetes, but he handled it with great bravery," said Father Robert A. Cairone, pastor of Holy Maternity Church in Audubon. A classmate of Fr. Fallon's, Fr. Cairone recalled, "He was a dedicated, serious student who worked hard at his studies. He was also very devoted to his family and with his two sisters cared for his mother and father when they were ill." Monsignor Donald Velozo, pastor of St. Bernadette Northfield, who was also a classmate of Fr. Fallon's, said, "In addition to excelling academically, he was gentle and sensitive to the needs of his parishioners." Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Fr. Fallon attended college at Seton Hall University NJ and St. Mary's College KY and seminary at American College, University of Louvain Belgium. He was ordained June 27, 1964 at American College by the Most Reverend Charles A. Buswell, Bishop of Pueblo, Colorado. His parish assignments: pastor 1992-2000 and associate 1985-1992, St. John, Paulsboro; resident, St. Peter Celestine, Cherry Hill 1982-1985; resident, St. Catherine, Clayton 1965-1982; and resident, St. Mary, Gloucester 1964-1965. He was appointed to the diocesan Presbyteral Council from 1991-1995 and held three two-year terms on the diocesan Common Policy Committee for marriage preparation. He was alsoa participant in the Diocesan Synod 1992 and a member of the Medical Ethics Committee 1991 and Medical-Morality Committee at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital 1975-1977. In 1974-1975, he served as Vocation Coordinator at Gloucester Catholic High School, where he joined the faculty in 1964 while he pursued Graduate Studies at Villanova University. He is survived by two sisters, Sister M. Adrienne, O.P. of Linden, NJ and Sister Rose William, S.C.C. of Camp Hill Pennsylvania. The Mass of Jesus Christ the High Priest will be celebrated at St. John's Church on Beacon Avenue in Paulsboro at 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 11, 2003. Monsignor James R. Tracy will be the Principal Celebrant and Monsignor Joseph F. O'Connell will be the homilist. The Funeral Mass for Fr. Fallon will be celebrated Friday, December 12, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at St. John's Church, Paulsboro. Monsignor Thomas J. Morgan, Apostolic Administrator of the diocese will be the Principal Celebrant and Monsignor William P. Brennan will be the homilist. The viewing will be held from 2:00 P.M.- 7:45 P.M. on Thursday, December 11, 2003 and from 9:00 A.M.-10:15 A.M. on Friday, December 12, 2003. Burial will follow the Funeral Mass at New St. Mary's Cemetery in Bellmawr, NJ.
