Obituary of Dorothy M. Carney

Carney, Dorothy Mahley died Monday, June 28, 2004 at her home at the age of 92. Born in Philadelphia, Pa, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Henry and Florence Green Mahley; wife of the late George G. Carney; sister of Florence Ullrich and the late Horace S. Mahley. In November of l923 her family moved to Woodbury. Dorothy was a graduate of Woodbury High School Class of l930 .Working for Student Council from Sophomore year, secretary in Junior year and president in her Senior year was only part of her school life. Dorothy activities included President of the Junior Class, vice president of the Senior Class, secretary of the Girls? Athletic Association Junior year and president senior year, member of the French and Art Clubs. She was a veteran debater and the team brought victory to Woodbury High School when they not only won the South Jersey Debating Championship but won all three of the inter-scholastic debates Collingswood, Haddonfield and Haddon Heights in her Senior year. Dorothy entered the NJ State Normal School at Glassboro in January 1931 and was a member of the January, 1934 graduating Class. She was granted the degree of Bachelor of Education from the New Jersey State Teachers College at Glassboro in June of l934. Dorothy accepted a position before her graduation with special permission and started her teaching career at the Repaupo Grade School. In l934 Dorothy was hired by the Woodbury Board of Education at the Walnut Street School, moving to the Central School to teach Junior High Seventh Grade. Dorothy married George Carney in June of l937. After completing a course in remedial reading at the University of Pennsylvania, Dorothy became the first remedial reading teacher in the Woodbury Schools. She also had been principal of the Central Elementary School advancing to the Elementary Supervisor of the Woodbury Schools. She retired in June of l969. She was the past Matron of the Woodbury Chapter 109 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Dorothy was a communicant and active member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Woodbury as a teacher in the Sunday School and a devoted Altar Guild member for over 40 years until her illness 5 years ago. She enjoyed gardening and her flowers, was a avid reader and loved calling on family and friends with her baskets of goodies. . Dorothy is survived by her sister Florence Ullrich and husband Jim , a nephew Donald S. Mahley and wife Janet, a niece Patricia Murphy and husband David, a great nephew Gregory R. Mahley and wife Tracy and great niece Janis Murphy Hargrove and husband Charles. A viewing will be held on Thursday July 1, 2004 from 5 PM to 8 PM in the McGuinness Funeral Home 34 Hunter Street, Woodbury, NJ 08096 Burial Office and Eucharist Friday July 2, 2004 at 10 AM, Christ Episcopal Church.
