Obituary of Elmer A. Krieg

KRIEG?Elmer A., a 50 year resident of Woodbury Heights, NJ, was born Oct. 14, 1920 in East St Louis, Illinois, died April 28, 2007 in Woodbury, NJ. At the age of 19 he entered the Washington University in St Louis, Missouri as an engineering major. Less than a year and a half later the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred and he joined the United States Marines as an enlisted man. On January 14, 1944 he graduated from the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School, commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. While stationed in Corpus Christi Texas he met his future wife, Mary Volk who was serving as a Navy WAVE. They were married in Woodbury on June 22, 1946. In November of 1950 Elmer was wounded in Korea during action in the Chosin Reservoir campaign. Quoting from Martin Russ? book ?Breakout ? The Chosin Reservoir Campaign?, ?They had been pushed out so fast that they left a machine gun up on the crest, and now Lieutenant Krieg was trying to find volunteers to go back with him and retrieve it.? ?Lt. Krieg was reported as missing in action.? In June of 1956 he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps having achieved the rank of Captain. After his discharge he and Mary moved to Woodbury Heights where he worked for RCA in many different areas. He retired from RCA in 1985. Elmer was an active member of St Margaret?s in Woodbury Heights. He loved to bowl, play softball and golf. He was always willing to pitch in when ever anyone needed help. In his later years he became very active in the Order of the Purple Heart Chapter in Gloucester, NJ acting as their Treasurer. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family, his son Gary Krieg and wife Janice, his grandchildren and their families, Jodi and Scott Andrina, Erin and Brian Houg and Brandon Krieg and Jessica and his great grandson Brayden Krieg. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Wed. 7-9 PM in the McGuinness Funeral Home, 34 Hunter St., Woodbury. Mass of Resurrection Thurs. 10 AM in St. Margaret RC Church, 3rd & Beech, Woodbury Heights. Interment with military honors in the Gloucester County Veteran?s Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.
