Later, Onie relocated to the Philadelphia area and began working at Campbell Soup Company in New Jersey for 33 years until retirement. In July 1947 she met and married her late husband Edsil Pankey. To this union, three children were born. Onie joined the St. Matthews Baptist Church where she attended until her health failed her. She loved to sing gospel hymns and read the Bible.
