Mary Fillius

Obituary of Mary Fillius

Mary Fillius (nee Vasta), of West Deptford, New Jersey, passed away at home on Monday, September 16, 2019.  She was 82.

Legacy

Mary will be remembered most by those that had the opportunity to know her as a selfless, caring and generous soul.  She always lent a helping hand to those that were in need and would give the shirt off of her back so that one would not have to go without.  She had a good sense of humor, loved her family and enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren.  A good evening for Mary would be spent watching M.A.S.H. or Walker Texas Ranger with a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

Mary joined the military after graduating from high school and proudly served in the United States Navy.  After she was honorably discharged in 1959, she began working for the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard where she worked in clerical operations for 32 years until she retired.  Mary was proud of her country, proud of her time spend with the United States Navy and a proud Veteran.

Mary was an incredible baker.  She enjoyed baking for everyone, and frequently showed her gratitude towards others by supplying them with home baked goods.  Among many of her famous recipes was her Jewish Apple Cake, Angel Food Cake, Cream Puffs and Butter or Sugar Cookies.  When Mary was not in the kitchen baking up something sweet for those she loved and cared about, you could find her hand-crafting porcelain dolls which could be seen all throughout her home.  She also enjoyed knitting, and donated much of her work to long-term healthcare facilities.

Family

She is the beloved wife to Jerome Fillius; devoted mother to Chris (Joanne) and Andre' (Kimberly); loving grandmother to Angelica Pezzano, Christian Fillius and Gianna Fillius; cherished great grandmother to Michael, Arthur and Brayden; dear sister to Rose Blasetto, Leonardo "Sonny" Vasta (Anita), Alfio "Buster" Vasta (Stephanie) .  Mary is predeceased in death by her parents, Leonardo and Clara Vasta, her sisters and brother-in-laws; Catherine and Joseph Taylor, Elizabeth and Robert Mattson, Constance and Graville Munyon, and George Blasetto.
