Obituary of Donald G. Ley, Sr.

Donald G. Ley, Sr., 91, of Woodbury Heights, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 16, 2023.

Legacy

Donald graduated from Yokohama High School in Japan while his parents were stationed there. Donald attended Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. Donald proudly served his country in the United States Army Sergeant from October 13, 1952- October 1, 1954 (Infantry Division) and was a veteran of the Korean War. Donald worked in the banking industry for over 30 years where he concluded his career as a Vice President of First Fidelity Bank. Donald enjoyed coaching youth sports and was a member of the Indian Guide Program. Don enjoyed watching the Pro Philadelphia Sport Teams. He was a well-known leader who served his community of Woodbury Heights. A former councilman, Mayor, Lions Club Member, EMT, Fire Inspector, Fire Marshal, Volunteer Firefighter whose dedication to the Woodbury Heights Fire Department lasted over 60 years. Don received several awards including being selected as New Jersey Firefighter of the Year. Most recently he attended the Army-Navy Game where he was honored as the Veteran of the Year by VETX. Don was passionate about giving back. He positively impacted his community, and will be truly missed.

Family

He is the beloved husband of Isabelle Ley (nee McNesby) and the late Janice Ley (nee Edmunds). Devoted father of Donald Jr. (Joanne), Cheryl (Jack) and Gregory (Jane). Adored grandfather of 6 and great grandfather of 4. Also survived by his step-children the late John, David (Kim), Sherri, Denise (Bill), 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Son of the late George Sr. and Florence Ley. Dear brother-in-law to Jean (Arthur) and Debi (Tony). He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Farewell Tribute

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation from 9:00AM to 10:45AM on Thursday, February 23rd in the First Presbyterian Church of Woodbury Heights, 355 Elm Avenue, Woodbury Heights, NJ 08097. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Woodbury Heights Fire Department, 534 Elm Avenue, Woodbury Heights, NJ 08097 or to the “Donald Ley Sr. Good Citizen Scholarship”, those donations must be directed to the Woodbury Heights Improvement, Protective & Fire Association, in memo please indicate it is for the Scholarship, Address to Woodbury Heights Fire Department, 534 Elm Street, Woodbury Heights, NJ 08097 or American Cancer Society- www.cancer.org.scholarship.
