Obituary of Raymond John Childs, Jr.

Raymond John Childs, Jr., of Glassboro, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 24, 2022.  He was 66.

Legacy

Raymond was born in Orange, NJ, and raised in Paterson, NJ. He graduated from Don Bosco Tech High School in 1974 where he was a stand-out basketball player. After high school, he moved to South Jersey to attend Glassboro State College.

 

In the fall of 1975, he became a member of IOTA PHI THETA Fraternity, Inc. He was one of the 12 Line Brothers, known as the "Spirit of The Boogie TNT".  In 1979 he graduated with his bachelor's degree in criminal justice. Bosco's family and friends will remember him as being a lover of basketball and music. He was also known for being a hard-working and active man.  They will tell you that when he wasn't working, he "was working".  He was always on the go and loved keeping busy.  For over 40 years he worked at the Juvenile Detention Center and the Gloucester County Corrections Facility as an officer, social worker, and administrator.  During this time, he also was a part-time bus driver for New Jersey Transit, served on the committee for the Breath of Life Ministries, and worked as a referee. Ray was a member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO), Camden Board #34 for over 20 years and was a high school varsity official.

 

Family

He is the beloved husband of over 40 years to Vicki Waller-Childs; devoted father of Raymond John Childs, III & his wife Brandis and also Brittney Childs; treasured grandfather to Justis Childs.  Dear brother of Charlotte Childs Olla & Crystal Cox-Tober (Lance Tober) and pre-deceased by his late brother, Ralph Childs and parents, Phyllis Childs Cox-Velez and Raymond John "Johnnie" Childs, Sr. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. 

 

Farewell Tribute

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bosco's visitation at the McGuinness Funeral Home, 573 Egg Harbor Road, Sewell, NJ 08080, on Saturday, July 16, 2022, from 11 am to 1 pm.  Funeral Service will begin at 1 pm at the funeral home.
