Obituary of Kathryn E. Jacobs Jones

Kathryn Elizabeth “Toby” Jones

Woodbury, N.J.

Kathryn Elizabeth (nee Jacobs) Jones age 105, of Woodbury, affectionately known as “Toby” went home to be with her Lord on Monday, May 11th, 2020 at the Advanced Subacute Rehabilitation Center in Sewell.

LEGACY

Her passing was the result of complications from the COVID-19 virus. Prior to her recent healthcare residency at Advance Subacute she had been a resident at the Atrium Post Acute Care Center in Woodbury.

At the time of her passing, Toby was believed to be Woodbury’s and Gloucester County’s oldest resident. She was born on the family farm in Swedesboro August 21st, 1914, and was one of eight siblings born to Theodore Jacobs and his wife Rose Ann (nee Carolan) Jacobs, and attended elementary school in Mullica Hill.  The family left its Tomlinson Station Road farm after her father Theodore died at age 42, and moved to Glover Street in Woodbury.

After graduation from Woodbury High School in 1932, she continued her education at West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital’s School of Nursing and completed her training in 1936. She married Smith Hewitt Jones in 1937. The couple was married for 52 years and raised three children in Woodbury.

For 42 years Toby worked as a Registered Nurse at hospitals in Gloucester and Camden counties.  After her long tenure in nursing, Toby retired from Woodbury’s Underwood Memorial Hospital (now Inspira Medical Center) in 1979.  She continued to volunteer at the hospital an additional nine years and was honored in 1988 for logging 10,000 hours of volunteer service at UMH. She had often said she was “humbled” to have been able to provide nursing care and counseling to so many who were dealing with pain and sickness.

On the occasion of her 100th Birthday in 2014, she was honored at her North American Street Home by many well wishers including family, neighbors, local officials, as well as Woodbury High School alumni and former co-workers.

“Toby” lived an extraordinary life having as a child survived the Spanish Influenza, lived through two World Wars, the Great Depression and kept the home fires burning while her husband served in WWII. Sadly she was predeceased in life by two of her three children Susan Jones Chrone and Frederick Jacob Jones.

FAMILY

She is survived by her son Robert (Martha) Jones of Cherry Grove Beach, SC, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Kathryn was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of the Holy Angels Parish in Woodbury, NJ.
