Eva Godfrey

Obituary of Eva M. Godfrey

Eva Madden Godfrey, 92, of Blackwood, NJ, passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, March 5, 2019.

Legacy

Eva had a lively spirit and personality.  With her joyful smile and bold voice, you always knew when Eva was in your presence.  She enjoyed sports, loved animals, collected stamps, and enjoyed traveling.  Eva was never afraid of a debate, but never lost her loving smile.  Nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews can attest that even though she came with white hair, she was “cool” and could relate and have fun with people of all ages.  Most of all, she loved her Lord Jesus Christ and faithfully served him throughout her lifetime.

Eva was born June 25, 1926, in Newport, NJ.  She received a bachelor’s degree in theology from Grace Seminary and another bachelor’s degree in science from Purdue University.  Eva and her good friend, the late Sue Morano, served together as missionaries in Japan for four years and also continued to serve the Japanese in Seabrook, NJ.  Later, they taught at Christian schools in New York and South Carolina for many years before retiring.  In 2008, Eva needed more assistance and moved to National Park, NJ, where she lived for the next year with her niece, Lois Phelps.  When professional care became necessary, she moved to Elmwood Hills Healthcare Center in Blackwood, NJ.  During her time in New Jersey, Lois and her late daughter, Marguerite Phelps, cared for their aunt with faithful and loving devotion.  Eva spent her last days with the loving support of her family at her side. The family appreciates the excellent care she received from the staff of Elmwood Hills who were especially kind and loving during Eva's last illness.  They also thank the staff of Serenity Hospice for their wonderful support.  Lastly, the family is most grateful for all of the varied and significant support that Aunt Eva received over her lifetime from the nieces and nephews of many different branches of her family tree.  Gratefulness for help received also extends to her church family who are all part of the great family tree, the body of Christ, that Eva was grafted into many years ago.  Eva is one beautiful, unique flower, still very alive and sweet-scented, that spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Christ everywhere, nourished by the one true vine, Jesus Christ.

Family

Eva is the beloved daughter of the late Alfred and Bertha (Williams) Godfrey.  Seven brothers and sisters, as well as brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, predeceased her: John (Cartha), Edna (Harry Biggs), Paul (Mary), May (Earl Martin), Edwin (Sarah), James (Fran), and infant David.   Numerous nieces and nephews survive her.  She will be missed by many family and friends.
