Obituary of Karin A Engkvist

Karin A. Engkvist (née Karlsson), wife of Kenneth E. Engkvist, passed peacefully in Washington Township, NJ on March 29, 2018.  Throughout her life, Karin was known for her empathy, compassion, and caregiving as a wife, mother, grandmother, nurse, and volunteer.  

Born in Brooklyn, NY on January 30, 1941, Karin lived and worked in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey.  Following in the footsteps of her immigrant mother she chose nursing as a career and earned her nursing degree from Hartwick College in 1962. After graduating she began working, and in 1963 married Ken, whom she had begun dating during their college days.   During her long career, Karin contributed to the health and well-being of many patients via, among others, the Visiting Nurse Service in Cheshire, Connecticut, Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, and finally as a volunteer for Caring Hospice in southern New Jersey.  Karin always looked forward to making her annual trip to her Hartwick College Nursing Class reunions, which still take place more than 50 years after their graduation.

Karin’s greatest joys were her family and friendships, whether lifelong or newly established.  One of her prized compliments was to remark that a person ‘didn’t have a mean bone in their body,’ and this was certainly true of Karin herself, as she always sought to find the good in people.  As a proud Norwegian-American, she was famous for her Scandinavian cookies at Christmastime.  

In addition to her husband Ken, Karin is survived by her loving son Karl Engkvist and his wife Aja Kimura of Singapore, devoted daughter Kristine Dwyer of Turnersville NJ, and her grandchildren, Olivia Dwyer, Ben Dwyer and Ariel Kimura.

Farewell Tribute

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her visitation on Saturday, March 31st from 12:00PM to 1:00PM in the McGuinness Funeral Home, 573 Egg Harbor Road, Sewell, NJ. Memorial Service will begin at 1:00PM.  Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association, 1031 Route 22 West, Bridgewater, NJ 08807- Lungusa.org or Caring Hospice, 102 Gaither Dr., Mount Laurel, NJ 08054, www.caringhospice.com.
