Obituary of Edward A. Carter, Sr.

Edward A. Carter, Sr., aged 83 years, of Williamstown, NJ passed away on March 2, 2018.

Born at St. Christopher’s Hospital in Philadelphia on September 18, 1934, Ed lived at home on the farm for many years and worked the farm with his dad. He was a 1952 graduate of Paulsboro High School. Ed worked many jobs including truck driver, heavy equipment operator, sales, and even ran a cemetery with his dad, but his real love was flying. He first soloed in 1952 and earned his commercial license in 1962. He flew for Lewis Flying Service out of Cross Keys Airport.

In 1963, he met Betty Ann Hammond through her brother, and they were married on May 23, 1964. They raised five children:  Eddie, Jr., Beth Ann, Colleen, Maria, and Nikki.

Ed became a member of Local 542 Operating Engineers and worked until his retirement after 37 years. He would take leave in the summers to return to his passion of crop spraying. He also flew fire bombers for Downstown Aero and the NJ Forest Fire Service. He flew for several spraying companies until going into business in 1974. In 1982, he purchased Webb Field and renamed it Southern Cross Airport. Ed and Betty Ann built a home on the airport where they lived together until her passing in 2008.

Ed was involved in many organizations including the Quiet Birdmen, where he served 3 terms as Key Man, and the North East Aerial Applicators Assn., where he served as president for 2 years. He was a member of Williamstown Fire Co., Clarksboro Fire Dept. where he served as president, and Star Cross Fire Dept. where he served as Assistant Chief. Ed was a member of Thorofare Grange and served as Master.  He was also a member of Gloucester Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol. and was a member of St. Mary’s Parish where he served as an usher for many years.

Ed is survived by his children:  Edward, Jr. (Sandra) of Williamstown, Elizabeth Carter of Turnersville, Colleen Reilly (Robert) of Woodstown, Maria Elena Stralkowski (Michael) of Limerick, PA, Susan “Nikki” Smith (Christopher) of Atco. Ed is also survived by 11 grandchildren:  Raven, Jaine, Carrie, Emma, Eddie III, Erin, Brendan, Robbie, Aidan, Karalee, and Cheyenne.


Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday evening 5-8:30 PM and Saturday 8-9:00 AM in the McGUINNESS FUNERAL HOME, 573 Egg Harbor Road, (Sewell) Washington Twp. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM in Our Lady of Peace Parish at St. Mary’s R. C. Church, Main Street, Williamstown. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Williamstown.
